Truckstop Souvenir: Music

Horse and Rider

(Truckstop Souvenir)
Dennis James
Well there’s a horse and rider coming
Beneath the red and gold sunset
He’s kicking up a trail of dust
You best fetch him something wet

He’s headed west from Arkansas
And he’s leaning to the side
Either that man has hurt himself
Or he’s too tired to ride

Well mister I come from Little Rock
I’ve rode for three days straight
My horse is nearly ruined
I can’t remember when I last ate

Believe I ought to rest a spell
And I’d be much obliged
If you offered a home cooked meal
And a fresh horse for me to ride

Chorus:
If you ride that hard you’re running
And if you run that long you’re dying
You die that young you’re trying
You ain’t ever gonna be a peaceful man

Well son I know that look in your eyes
I’ve seen them desperate days
But that trouble you’re running from
It ain’t ever gonna go away

If you step inside I’ll feed you
And maybe bend your ear awhile
We all got a story to tell
And I’ll trade you yours for mine

Well we talked all night and shared a pint
And when the boy was through
I looked him straight in the eye
And said I got some words for you

You’ll be looking over your shoulder
Sleeping with your gun
It ain’t no way to live a life
But that’s life on the run

Chorus

Well morning came and that boy was gone
A note left in his place
It said I thank you, sir, for your kind words
But I best be on my way

He left me a sack of gold
And he took my sorrel mare
I fear that boy’s gonna ride too hard
To God knows where

Chorus
