Truckstop Souvenir: Music

Deliver Me

(Truckstop Souvenir)
Dennis James
I used to work the land
Now I work the day shift
A hired hand, I get paid in wages
But every nightfall before sleeping
I hear the distant cries of a scarecrow weeping
Like thunder from a storm that’s blowing in

When I was a young kid
Well I liked to chase the wind
But all I ever did was lose it in the end
So I grew up a little too fast
Now I watch the days go past
From the window of a train car
taking me away from you

I used to read the good book
Now I watch the t.v.
If you stop to look won’t you say a prayer for me
Because the light, she’s growing dim
And you can see the mess I’m in
Even with the oil in the lamp running out

Well now I got an empty space
In the middle of my soul
It’s an ugly place and it takes a toll
So I close my eyes to pray
But the devil looks my way
Oh deliver me lord from the works of my own hand

The river’s gonna crest today
If the rain don’t stop
It’ll carry me away if I like it or not
If it does won’t you bury me
Away from this misery
And visit my grave on some far off better day
